After Viaplay, HBO Max comes to the Netherlands; to launch in 15 European countries

HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s premium streaming platform, announced that it is expanding its service to 15 European countries, including the Netherlands, from March 8, 2022.

The announcement comes three months after its successful launch in the Nordics and Spain in October 2021. The company is also planning to expand to six European countries, including Greece and Turkey, later this year.

Christina Sulebakk, General Manager, HBO Max EMEA, says, “HBO Max is a new streaming experience offering the very best entertainment, movies, original series and kids programming from Warner Bros., HBO, DC, Cartoon Network, Max Originals and more. We are thrilled to confirm that on March 8th, HBO Max is arriving in 15 additional European countries as we continue making the platform available across the continent and beyond.”

HBO Max: What you need to know

HBO Max allows users to watch series and movies from Warner Bros., HBO, DC, Cartoon Network, and Max Originals. Upon launch, users can catch up on films like The Matrix Resurrections, Dune, King Richard, The Suicide Squad, and Tom and Jerry.

Users can personalise the account with up to five viewer profiles, three simultaneous streams, and no limit on registered devices per subscription.

HBO Max will be available on major platforms and devices, including smart TVs (Samsung, LG, and Android TV), streaming devices (Apple TV 4K and Google Chromecast), game consoles (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S), and mobile and tablets (iPhone, iPad, and Android).

In terms of subscription, customers will be able to pay via major providers (VISA, Mastercard, and PayPal) and via in-app purchases in major markets (Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Samsung Checkout).

Johannes Larcher, Head of HBO Max International, says, “The global roll out of HBO Max continues at pace as we launch the platform in 15 additional European countries, taking us to 61 territories worldwide. We are delivering on our strategy to go direct-to-consumer around the world which coupled with our beloved content will give us the scale needed to be one of the top global streaming platforms.”

Viaplay in the Netherlands

Last year, Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) confirmed that its Viaplay streaming service will launch in the Netherlands on March 1, 2022.  Unlike HBO Max, Viaplay offers a mix of premium live sports, Viaplay Originals, Hollywood films and series, and kids’ content.

The service will be a single package priced at €13.99 per month and will be available through distribution partners such as VodafoneZiggo and KPN and as a direct subscription.

The launch takes Viaplay’s footprint to 11 countries, with at least five further markets to follow by the end of 2023.
