Amsterdam-based AI startup KIMO raises €3M to personalise education: Here’s how

KIMO, an Amsterdam-based AI startup focused on personalised education, announced that it has secured €3M in a funding round led by two Dutch investors. The company didn’t disclose the names of the investors.

The funding round comes thirteen months after an initial round of €1.25M closed in September last year.

“The trends in the last 2 years have emphasised the need for digital upskilling. This is a global trend, with EdTech in some markets growing 50 per cent year on year. That said, online learning today doesn’t work as well as it should, as a lack of engagement is still a big problem in online learning environments. In KIMO, we believe the gamechanger will be personalized education – made possible by the AI revolution – which aims to serve the user exactly the right content at the right time,” says Rens ter Weijde, CEO of KIMO.

KIMO’s roadmap

The Dutch company plans to work closely with local OEMs, telcos and partners in the education space enabling them to scale more efficiently. The company recently  partnered with Indian telecom operator Jio and Chinese telecommunication equipment company Huawei.

Last year, the firm announced being part of startup programs at Google, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon.

KIMO says these partnerships will facilitate scaling and the acquisition of new users, providing them with a large dataset of actual online learning behaviour. This will also allow the company to further improve the AI models behind the recommendations.

The company plans to continue adding more high-quality content sources to its platform. KIMO also partnered with Packt, a publisher in the technology space.

Offering smart education

Founded by Harvard graduates Krishna Deepak Nallamilli and Rens ter Weijde in 2018, Kimo is a venture focused on smart education in Amsterdam.

They founded the company after realising that a drastic change was needed to effectively reskill the world population at scale.

The platform is focused on auto-generating individual learning paths through online content where the end goal is truly personalised learning paths. Content can be personalised using filters for preferred content type, price point, content length, and more.

KIMO combines an intelligent back-end (e.g. automated knowledge domain graphs, jobs to skills mappings) with an engaging frontend (e.g. virtual assistant with QA models).
