Amsterdam’s Lalaland launches new product that enables fashion brands to generate virtual fashion models


Lalaland, an Amsterdam-based fashion-tech startup, announced the launch of their new product, the Genesis Meta Model Creator, at CES 2022.

The latest product helps fashion brands and retailers create a highly personalised and inclusive shopping experience by generating a virtual fashion model of different body types, sizes, hair types, and skin complexions closest to the shopper’s preference.

Why virtual fashion model? 

According to the Dutch company, both fashion brands and retailers hold several photoshoots each year to publish a new collection. 

These photoshoots are complex, time-consuming, and expensive since they require a lot from human models, photographers, makeup artists, and hairstylists to  venues.  

Here’s where Lalaland’s Genesis Meta Model Creator comes into play. 

Along with creating a highly personalised experience, the company’s virtual fashion model platform takes just 15 per cent of the cost of conventional photoshoots. 

“There is a massive opportunity for fashion brands, retailers, and digital designers to drop legacy practices and invest in new AI-driven technology that will change the game. With our virtual fashion models, we enable brands and retailers to go to market faster than they ever have, increase average order values, and tackle one of fashion’s biggest problems, returns. If there was ever a time to experiment with technology like this, it’s now,” says Harold Smeeman, co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Lalaland.ai.

Lalaland says its technology helps increase the first-time correct hit rate and reduce the need to order several sizes through personalised virtual fitting experience online. 

“Return rates will fall, resulting in fewer garments being thrown away. It also means fewer shipments to the consumer and back to the retailer, reducing transportation-related carbon emissions,” says the company. 

Lalaland: What you need to know

Founded by Michael Musandu and Ugnius Rimsa in 2019, Lalaland uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop highly realistic digital photo models for e-commerce applications for clothing and fashion brands. 

The Dutch company uses neural networks to generate images of artificial humans. Through its platform, the company offers brands a vast library of age, size, and ethnic-inclusive models so that online shoppers can see themselves in the latest apparel as per their requirements.

To date, the company has raised $242K (approx €214K) in funding. 

Lalaland’s past developments 

Last year, Lalaland was selected as one of the six finalists of the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Frontier Challenge. The global annual programme is all about finding and supporting innovative startups that are making the fashion landscape more inclusive.

In June 2021, Google selected Lalaland for its European ‘Google for Startups Black Founders Fund’ in an attempt to increase diversity in the startup and tech world.

What is CES?

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is a global tech event organised by the Consumer Technology Association. CES 2022 takes place from January 5th to January 7th at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Lalaland will be showcasing the Genesis Meta Model Creator at CES in the NL Tech Square Start-Up Pavilion in Eureka Park at Tech West at the Venetian Expo Venue, Level 1, Hall G.
