Aiven, a Helsinki-based startup that provides managed open source data technologies on all major clouds, has raised $100M (approx €84.5M) in a Series C funding round.
The round was led by Atomico, with participation from World Innovation Lab and Salesforce Ventures as new investors. Lead investors of Aiven’s Series A (Earlybird Venture Capital) and Series B (IVP) also significantly increased their capital commitments to Aiven.
The latest round brings the company’s total investment to $150M (approx €127M) at a valuation of more than $800M (approx €676M).
London-based Atomico is an international investment firm that invests in ambitious tech founders at Series A and beyond with a particular focus on Europe, leveraging deep operational experience to supercharge their growth.
Founded in 2006, Atomico has partnered with over 100 ambitious teams – including those at Supercell, Graphcore, Omio, Klarna, Lilium, MessageBird, Gympass, Pipedrive and The Climate Corporation. It currently has $2.7B (approx €2.2B) in assets under management.
Utilisation of funds
The funding will be used to bring new products to the market, increase contributions to developing open source technologies and continue the company’s international expansion in North America and the APAC region.
Further, the startup plans to double its headcount over the next year and launch a formal open source program office.
“Aiven’s mission is to champion open source, making the lives of developers better in all that we do,” says Oskari Saarenmaa, CEO and co-founder at Aiven. “The most recent funding will enable us to continue adding new service capabilities, grow our team, and expand into new markets, as well as more significantly contribute to the open-source community.”
Manages open-source data infrastructure
Founded in Hannu Valtonen, Heikki Nousiainen, Mika Eloranta, and Oskari Saarenmaa in 2016, Aiven manages companies’ open source data infrastructure in the cloud.
The Finnish startup is on a mission to enable developers to focus on building applications without worrying about software infrastructure by providing integrated solutions.
The startup supports Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, DigitalOcean, and UpCloud cloud platforms, enabling users to shift data freely between clouds or even adopt multi-cloud environments.
Combines multiple open-source tools
Aiven provides fully managed services across various core open source projects, including Apache Kafka, Apache Cassandra, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Redis, InfluxDB, Grafana, and M3 in more than 80 regions.
The company counts startups to global leaders like Comcast, Decathlon, Wolt, OVO Energy as its clients.
Partnership with Humanitec
Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with Humanitec, a provider of Internal Developer Platforms.
According to the company, Aiven’s service lets developers use various open-source managed databases, minimising vendor lock-in and standardising the developer experience in the cloud, while Humanitec performs the equivalent for the application layer.
Together, Aiven and Humanitec aim to keep overhead within operations teams as low as possible and provide developers a customised, reliable solution based on their unique needs.
Headquartered in Helsinki, Aiven has offices in Berlin, Sydney, Toronto, and Boston.
