Be passionate, shameless, consistent: Madan Gowri’s success mantra as content creator

For those looking to venture into content creation, YouTuber Madan Gowri’s advice is straightforward: “You need only one thing, shamelessness. The moment you throw away that fear and do it consistently, you have a winner.”

He stressed the importance of passion and cultivating a genuine interest in content creation, and warned against solely making videos for money. “If you do something you love, it doesn’t matter how bad the business is. Eventually, businesses go up when you do something you love,” he asserted.

In a candid and insightful discussion at YourStory‘s flagship event Tamil Nadu Story 2024, Madan Gowri, the celebrated content creator with over 7.5 million subscribers on YouTube, and Founder and CEO of mCholas, shared his journey from growing up in Thoothukudi to becoming a leading digital influencer.

One of the most pivotal moments in Madan’s career was the launch of Jio in India in 2016. At the time, Madan was in the US pursuing a Master’s degree in digital marketing. The advent of Jio, which revolutionised internet accessibility in India, opened up unprecedented opportunities for digital content creators.

Recognising the potential of content creation in the country, Madan returned to India, fully aware that the digital landscape was about to change dramatically. This decision set the stage for his future success and significantly influenced his career trajectory.

The second defining moment for Madan was the COVID-19 pandemic. During the turmoil of lockdowns, he was able to provide timely and relevant content about the government’s actions and lockdown measures, often ahead of mainstream media. His ability to deliver accurate and immediate information garnered him a substantial following, he said.

His approach to tackling taboo topics has also garnered significant attention. “I got famous also because of a bunch of taboo topics. When you do something that others have not done, people get curious,” he said. His fearless approach has helped him reach a wider audience, breaking stereotypes and fostering open conversations.

One of his highest-watched videos tackled the subject of menstruation, a topic often considered taboo in many cultures. “In an industry that was dominated by men, and with a male following, suddenly this video garners a new following. Half of the population, which did not have much content to consume, start understanding that there’s a guy talking about this topic,” Madan explained.

“In any business, content creation, or any field, as long as you’re progressive, it’s good. The moment you do something regressive, it’s a problem,” he summed it up.
