Dutch-based D4 secures €3M from Meewind to support sustainable projects

Utrecht-based D4, a company that initiates, develops and invests in sustainable energy projects that are impactful and relevant to its environment, announced that it has raised €3M in a fresh round of funding.

The investment came from Meewind, a firm that invests in sustainable energy and green projects that benefit both investors and the environment. With its 12,000 private investors, the company has been a Dutch investment fund manager since 2007.

Supporting a range of sustainable projects

Meewind intends to help in D4’s next phase of growth by making this investment, which it believes will give it additional financial strength to start, grow, and finance even more sustainable energy projects.

Meewind is also known for investing in companies and projects that contribute to the transition to a green energy supply. It has already invested in Greenchoice, OrangeGas, econic, and many other solar, wind, geothermal, and green gas projects through its various funds.

D4 claims that its focus is on developing various sustainable projects in the Dutch market, such as heat networks, geothermal heat, biogas, hydrogen, battery storage, and the implementation of new technologies. The new funding in D4 is, therefore, “perfectly” in line with Meewind’s course.

Founder of Meewind, Willem Smelik, says, “In the past five years, D4 has proven to develop sustainable projects with an eye for spatial integration and environmental involvement. They embrace innovation and have financially robust operations. To date, the growth ambitions and the experience of the founders fit well with our own ambition and the expectations of our 12,000 participants. By investing now in D4, the participants of the Regional Sustainable Green Fund contribute directly to the development of new energy projects.”

Capital utilisation

Co-founder of D4, Michiel Ottevanger, says, “We founded our company with a clear goal: to accelerate the energy transition by not only initiating and developing sustainable energy projects but above all by investing in that development.”

Ottevanger adds, “The timing of Meewind’s capital injection could not be better. We have to pull out all the stops in the Netherlands to make the energy system more sustainable and to achieve the climate goals. And that is more and more complex than just the production of wind and solar energy. For example, we are currently working on making the heat demand in the built environment and industry more sustainable, using geothermal energy and heat networks.”

D4 says it has decided to use the proceeds to grow faster and start development processes that until now proved difficult in the market.

About D4

Today, institutional investors and banks are funding the building and operation of renewable energy projects more frequently. They often think investing in the development phase is still too risky. This is where D4 steps in.

The platform invests specifically throughout that stage of development. In this way, it can capitalise on profit from sustainable projects more quickly. And this leads to the creation of more sustainable energy. D4 aims to accelerate the energy transition by focusing on key value drivers and decision-driven development where risks are mitigated.

Shell, Firan and D4 are initiators of the Warmterotonde & Geothermal energy Rijnland. Firan and D4 are building a heat pipeline in the Duin & Bollenstreek, the Leiden area, and Greenport Aalsmeer.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate has given Shell and D4 permission to investigate and develop geothermal energy in the Rhineland region of Holland. The municipalities in the Holland Rjinland region and Haarlammermeer in North Holland are covered by the licence. The permit is good for six years. The licence area has the capacity to produce more than 200 MW of thermal energy. This will cover the majority of Holland Rjinland’s and Greenport Alsmeer’s heating needs.
