Dutch cashback app Scoupy acquired by Cashback Holding: Know more

Utrecht-based Scoupy, a cashback app, announced on Thursday that it has been acquired by Cashback Holding for an undisclosed amount. DeGiro founders Niels Klok and Jasper Anderluh, and Ohpen founder Erik Drijkoningen own Cashback Holding.

The founder of Scoupy, Effective Media & Marketing (EMM), sold the platform in 2016 to Sanoma Media Nederland, which merged into DPG Media. After four years, EMM repurchased the platform in 2020.

And now, the platform will be taken over again from EMM, which boasts of entrepreneurs Geert Luyendijk, Jeroen Lubbers and Valentijn Bras.

“When we bought Scoupy back in August 2020, the impact of the corona crisis had been significant. However, advertisers had been virtually silent for months,” according to Bras.

He adds, “After an initial and necessary reorganisation, we were still able to close 2020 positively. After that, we started investing heavily in and building on our new plan with Scoupy and Hiiper: fully automating cashback as a reward and loyalty tool through PSD2, the new open banking standard in the EU, linked to super valuable insights. After a successful live pilot in the Netherlands with 10,000 consumers and eight retailers, we discussed external funding for a European roll-out with various parties. That’s how we met Cashback Holding. Our ideas about proposition and market turned out to be very close to each other, and the click between the entrepreneurs was soon there.”

Besides the acquisition, Cashback Holding will also invest €2M in Scoupy’s sister company Hiiper.

Hiiper is the data & insights company within EMM Holding that collects large amounts of data daily and turns it into insights to support the growth of retailers and brands through smart tools and technologies.

“With this deal, we will conquer Europe together and bring focus. Furthermore, the collaboration means that Scoupy’s propositions and Hiiper’s models can also be rolled out internationally in the countries where Woolsocks and/or Scoupy are launched,” says Drijkingen.

Scoupy: What you need to know

Founded in 2011, Scoupy is the largest cashback app in the Netherlands, with more than 2M users. The app allows customers to participate in cashback promotions at nearby supermarkets. The platform enables customers to buy the promotional product, take a photo of their receipt with the app, and get their money back.

“Scoupy has a unique proposition, valuable content, and many users, making it a great addition to our portfolio of activation companies such as Orange Buddies and Seniorenvoordeelpas.nl. With Scoupy, we can kickstart our plan in the Netherlands and strengthen our proposition internationally,” says director Erik Drijkoningen.

He adds, “We want to provide consumers in the Netherlands and Europe with the ultimate financial super app, in which you can link your bank accounts and then, in addition to categorisation and insight, automatically receive cashback and rewards in as many places as possible for online and offline spending at participating brands.”
