In the aftermath of pandemic-induced workforce disruption, pro-worker policies are key to economies achieving faster employment recovery.

European workers aren’t engaging in the American-style Great Resignation in quite the same numbers as the US, which begs the question if the former are simply happier at work than their American counterparts? Social workplace benefits for employees in Europe are generally more generous than in the US, which for a wealthy country has a low minimum wage, fewer holidays and no parental or sick leave.

Since the pandemic, companies realise that employees’ expectations have changed regarding workplace benefits and things they value. Employers are stepping up to show that they are adapting to this changing landscape of work.

In addition, the extra perks a company provides speaks volumes about a company’s culture, what they value and gives a good indication for job seekers as to how they treat their employees.

Demand for comprehensive family benefit programmes was already on the rise pre-Covid, but the pandemic brought them to the forefront. A generous benefits package can often include specialist services too, including referrals from primary care physicians. From dermatological health services to sleep specialists, many health coverage options include coverage for non-routine specialist exams and procedures.

In addition to health benefits, many employers offer paid time off, where staff can schedule personal days off work.

Businesses are also investing in ways to support remote workers in setting up and maintaining their home offices, while others are showing how much they value not only the work their employees do but their physical and psychological wellbeing too via comprehensive mental health and wellness benefits

And probably, the most topical benefit to arise in recent years is flexible working options. While many have historically been sceptical about whether remote work would impact productivity and company workflow, the pandemic has proven that many workers can execute their jobs as well as if not better while working from home.
