FB, Instagram Took Action Over 32 Mn & 2 Mn Content Respectively Between Jun 16- Jul 31


Social media giant Facebook has taken action against more than 32 Mn pieces of content between June 16, 2021 and July 31, 2021 as per its latest compliance report. 

Mark Zuckerberg led Facebook has taken action against 25.6 Mn content as it violated the California-based company’s spam policy area. It “actioned” over 3.5 Mn content that showed violent and graphic content. Around 2.6 Mn posts that were related to adult nudity and sexual activity were taken by Facebook.

As per Facebook, taking ‘action’ could include removing a piece of content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning. 

Facebook took action against  945.6 K post related to suicide and self injury 123.4K posts related to bullying and harassment posts, and around 324.3K posts related to hate speech.

The social media giant received a total of 1504 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism and it claimed that it has responded to all of these reports. Of the 1504 reports, Facebook saw 474 reports were related to account been hacked, 276 reports related to other issue, 146 reports related to bullying or harassment, 143 reports related to fake profiles, 128 reports related to inappropriate or abusive content, 110 reports in association to losing access to page, 80 reports in connection to nudity or sexual act, and others. 

The company claimed that it offered users with tools to resolve their issues in 1326 cases. 

Facebook’s photo and video sharing social networking platform Instagram took action against around 2 Mn content during the same period of time. The photo sharing platform took action against 1.1 Mn content based on violent and graphic content, around 881 K content related to suicide and self injury, more than 600K content related to adult nudity, and sexual activity during the same period of time. 

Pitting against Tiktok, through Reels, Instagram has taken action against 195.1K content related to bullying and harassment, around 56K content associated with hate speech. 

As per Instagram’s monthly report, the company received 265 reports through a grievance mechanism and claimed to have responded to all these reports. Instagram received 77 reports related to accounts being hacked, 61 reports related to fake profiles, and 44 reports related to bullying and harassment, and others. 

Instagram said that of the 265 reports, it has provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 181 cases. 

Both Facebook and Instagram released their monthly report to comply with the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 enacted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). 

The new guidelines demand social media platforms with more than 5 Mn users in India to publish its compliance report at an interval of 30 days along with hiring a chief compliance officer, chief grievance officer and nodal contact person. 

As per the government, Facebook has 41 Cr (410 Mn) users whereas Instagram enjoys 21 Cr (210 Mn) users in India. Facebook Owned WhatsApp earlier in the day revealed that it had banned over 3 Mn Indian accounts in the country between June 16 and July 31, 2021.
