Managing multiple development environments on a single computer is plenty of work on its own. As a result, millions of modern app developers, who work across many different codebases, face unnecessary “works-on-my-machine” problems.
Meet Gitpod, an online service that provides disposable, ready-to-code development environments for GitHub projects (GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket project).
Secured €11M
Based out of Kiel, Germany, the open-source developer platform, has raised $13M (approx €11M) in funding led by General Catalyst with participation from Speedinvest, Crane Venture Partners, and Vertex Ventures.
The proceeds will be used to expand its position as the leading platform for development environment automation, as well as to grow Gitpod’s open source community and relevant ecosystem partnerships.
“We write code within specific languages/frameworks, use tools, glue them together to (tool) chains, develop against APIs, and communicate and collaborate with other developers. All of that should be efficient, sustainable, and joyful,” says Sven Efftinge, CEO, Gitpod. “At DevXConf some of the brightest minds from the community get together and have a conversation on how we can make software engineering more productive and fun.”

Moreover, the company also announced the launch of DevX Conf, a community event exclusively about developer experience. The virtual event will take place April 28-29, 2021.

New features and redesigned dashboard
Also, Gitpod announced new features including, sudo privileges, Docker support, and VS Code integration. The entire dashboard has been redesigned as well to speed up developers’ workflows.
Founded by Dr Jan Koehnlein, Moritz Eysholdt, and Sven Efftinge in 2019, Gitpod is now used by 350k developers globally to automate development environments in a remote-first world.
The platform frees engineering teams from the friction of manually setting up local dev environments, saving dozens of hours and enable a new level of collaboration.
Gitpod works with GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket and can be deployed to public, private, or hybrid clouds, neatly integrating into infrastructure, giving users full control of their system and source code.
The developer experience gap is an increasingly documented concern as recently detailed in a post by Stephen O’Grady from RedMonk. “While developers have a wealth of tools at their fingertips, integrating them all together and operating that patchwork quilt of technologies is a major gap in the developer experience. One important tool in addressing the problem is automation, which can lower the burden on developers to maintain these complicated pipelines,” said Stephen O’Grady, Principal Analyst with RedMonk. “Gitpod’s embrace of automated, higher quality developer experiences, therefore, is one to watch.”
