GitHub launched its India operations last year, by setting up a centre to get more developers and enterprise customers from the country

GitHub saw 7.3 Mn new repositories from India, an increase of 81% year-on-year (YoY), while 1 Mn developers opened their first repository on the platform

The company is targeting to reach 10 Mn developers in India by 2023, on the back of its partnerships with several higher educational institutions here

Microsoft-owned GitHub, the open-source community and platform for developers, claimed it witnessed 1.8 Mn new developer registrations from India in 2020, taking the total number of Indian GitHub developers to 5.8 Mn. 

The key statistic was revealed by the US-based software development platform’s chief operating officer Erica Brescia during GitHub Satellite India 2021 late last month. 

GitHub launched its India operations last year, by setting up a centre to get more developers and enterprise customers from the country. The company had also said that it would hire employees across the community, engineering, sales, support, marketing, and services departments. Brescia had said that the Indian centre would enable GitHub’s customers to adopt development and operations practices at scale. It would also help them to collaborate with over 40 Mn developers across more than 100 Mn projects, she added.

During the online event, Brescia further disclosed that GitHub had seen 7.3 Mn new repositories from India, an increase of 81% year-on-year (YoY), while 1 Mn developers opened their first repository on the platform.

Moreover, at the event, Brescia launched the GitHub Accelerate for Startups program, wherein, GitHub will extend INR 2 Mn worth GitHub enterprise licenses to the portfolio companies of leading venture capital firms in India such as Blume Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Stellaris and Matrix Partners India, among others.

Notably, several other open source communities for developers such as Beanstalk, BitBucket and AWS CodeSummit exist. Their presence is increasingly relevant in India, which is expected to become the world’s largest developer population centre by 2024, surpassing even the US. For GitHub, India is the third-largest developer community after the US and China and continues to grow each year, as evidenced by the statistics mentioned above. 

Notably, few Indian startups such as developer blogging platform Hashnode and technology-focused skilling and hiring platform HackerEarth are present in India, catering to the growing needs of the Indian developer community.
