India’s competition watchdog has fined Meta $25.4 million for antitrust violations related to WhatsApp’s controversial 2021 privacy policy.
The Competition Commission of India also issued cease-and-desist orders against Meta and its messaging subsidiary WhatsApp, alongside mandating behavioral remedies.
The ruling follows the regulator’s 2021 investigation into WhatsApp’s “take-it-or-leave-it” privacy terms, which sparked concerns over data sharing practices with parent company Meta.
India is the largest market for Meta by users count. WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly active users in India.
