Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani on Monday (August 29) said Jio consolidated its position as ‘India’s number one digital services provider’ in the last one year.

The telecom operator has 421 Mn mobile broadband subscribers on its 4G network, consuming nearly 20 GB of broadband data, on an average, every month, Ambani said, adding that the data consumption has nearly doubled compared to a year ago.

“Over the past year, Jio has further consolidated its position as India’s Number One digital service provider,” the CMD said while addressing the conglomerate’s 45th annual general meeting (AGM).

Ambani said that the telco has laid 11 Lakh kilometres of pan-India fibre-optic network – ‘enough to go around earth more than 27 times’. JioFiber has also seen ‘acceleration’ in adoption, and is the numero uno FTTx (fibre to the home/premises) service provider in India with 7 Mn connected premises.

“Over the past year, we also saw acceleration in the adoption of JioFiber, with two out of every three new customers choosing it,” Ambani said.

As per the latest TRAI data, Jio led the pack when it came to number of wired broadband users with 6.16 Mn subscribers. In just three years of its launch, Jio has surpassed state-run BSNL, and Bharti Airtel and other local internet service providers (ISPs) to emerge as the leader in the space.

In total, the country is home to more than 28 Mn fixed-line internet connections.

“India is ranked 138th in the world in fixed broadband adoption. Jio will take India to be among the top 10 globally in fixed broadband adoption,” Ambani proclaimed.

Meanwhile, the high-profile event saw the launch of a slew of digital offerings including the JioAirFiber. It is a hotspot that will allow users to access the internet at gigabit speeds. JioAirFiber will deploy standalone 5G services, offering reduced latency and high speeds without the requirement of cables.

At the event, Jio also announced that it will roll out 5G services in key cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, by Diwali, with plans to ‘reach every town in the country’ by December 2023.

Reliance Jio has set aside INR 2 Lakh Cr for deployment of 5G services in the country.
