Meta Actioned 21.6 Mn Content Pieces Across FB & Instagram In May


Facebook actioned 17.5 Mn pieces of content, majority of which were related to spam, violence and adult nudity

Instagram took action against 4.1 Mn pieces of content, primarily related to violence, sexual activity and harassment online

Facebook’s proactive action rate in certain policy areas stood as high as 99.9% whole the same for Instagram stood at 99.7%

In its monthly compliance report for India for the month of May 2022, tech giant Meta reported that it took action against 21.6 Mn content pieces on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Of these, Facebook accounted for close to 17.5 Mn pieces of content. A majority of them were clubbed under the ‘spam’ category (9.3 Mn pieces), followed by content related to violent and graphic content (3.7 Mn) and adult nudity (2.6 Mn). 

Action was also taken under a slew of other categories such as child endangerment and sexual exploitation (689.5K), self-injury (482K), harassment (294.5K), among others. The proactive action rate on Facebook hovered anywhere between 80.1% and 99.9%.

Proactive action rate refers to the percentage of content flagged by the company before being reported by users. 

On the other hand, Meta actioned more than 4.1 Mn pieces of content on Instagram alone. A majority of the action pertained to violence and graphic content (2 Mn), sexual activity (520.4K), bullying and harassment (328.4K), among others. The proactive action rate on Instagram stood between 80% and 99.7%.

Facebook received 835 complaints regarding its platform in the month of May 2022. The social media giant claims to have provided tools in 564 cases for resolution of complaints. Of these, 318 grievances pertained to fake profiles, while 168 cases were related to hacked account claims. 

Of the rest of the 271 reports, Facebook said it took action on 183 grievances while no action was taken against 88 reports over a slew of reasons.

On the other hand, Instagram also received 13,869 complaints during May via its local grievance system in the country. The platform responded to all of them and provided tools for resolution in 4,693 cases.

For the remaining 9,173 complaints, specialised review was needed and action was initiated on 5,770 reports. A review was undertaken but no action was taken on another 3,403 complaints. 

In its compliance report for the month of April, Meta had said it actioned more than 20.95 Mn content pieces across Facebook and Instagram platforms over violations ranging from harassment to hate speech. 

In its latest compliance report, messaging app Whatsapp said that it banned more than 1.9 Mn Indian accounts in May this year.

Meanwhile, Twitter, in its latest compliance report, said that it received 1,589 complaints in India between April 26, 2022 and May 25, 2022, and took action against 1,621 URLs during the said period.

All social media platforms with more than 5 Mn users are mandated under the new IT Rules (Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021) to publish monthly compliance reports.
