There was a bright side to the pandemic too. A recent report in Cities journal reveals that the levels of the toxic chemical NO₂ came down by as much as 40% in major metropolitan areas like New York City, Paris and Milan during the first lockdown in 2020. The primary reason behind this is the absence of cars in these cities.
California-based micro mobility startup, Bird has announced that it will launch an e-bike, Bird Bike, on August 19. The company said in a statement that the product is aimed at making eco-friendly transportation options accessible to everyone.

This development comes after the startup invested $150M (approx €125.74M) in Europe to make cities car-free.
The demand for e-bikes also surged during the pandemic. Pre-pandemic reports estimated that e-bike sales would top $20 billion USD by 2023, with more than 40 million units sold worldwide per year and a combined 130 million between 2020-2023. The EU anticipates that, by 2030, e-bikes will outsell both traditional bikes and registered passenger cars alike.
“The demand for consumer e-bikes has never been greater, and neither has the need for innovative vehicles that get riders excited about cycling. That was our north star when developing the Bird Bike,” said Bird Chief Vehicle Officer Scott Rushforth.
Bird Bike Features
The Bird Bike will be equipped with features such as a Bafang electric motor that can deliver up to 50 miles (80 km) of range on a single charge. It will be available with a removable 36v battery for easy charging, chainless Gates Carbon drivetrain and fully integrated backlit handlebar dash display.
Maintenance becomes easy with the Gates Carbon Belt Drive and tts advanced, no-stretch carbon cord technology will provide efficient power with every pedal, the company claimed.
The company said that riders in the EU and UK can easily access 250W of continuous rated power in line with local regulations, while US riders can experience 500W of electric support.
The e-bike will have “Bird Boost” thumb throttle to add an extra burst of e-acceleration. LCD displays will also be a part of Bird Bike.
