Project Cece founding trio launches ‘Impactbytes’ to make product sustainability data accessible


The market demand for ethically produced goods has been on the rise, thanks to increasing government efforts to regulate businesses that fraudulently claim sustainable products. 

In fact, online businesses are forced to find and verify items that can adequately prove the true sustainable nature of their products. A new proposed EU legislation also requires businesses to be able to back up sustainability claims.

To help businesses find the sustainability credentials of a product, the founders of Project Cece, an Amsterdam-based online sustainable fashion marketplace, announced the launch of Impactbytes, a platform for product-level sustainability insights.

Marcella Wijngaarden, co-founder of Impactbytes, says, “It is really hard for search tools, marketplaces, and shops to get sustainability credentials of their products *on product level*, as products often come from different brands and sources with different levels of transparency and data availability.”

Impactbytes aims to solve these issues.

Founded by Melissa Wijngaarden, Noor Veenhoven, and Marcella Wijngaarden, Impactbytes addresses the issue through its intelligent data platform that makes product-level insights for fashion brands available through a single interface.

Marcella Wijngaarden adds, “We want to make product sustainability data easily available across the web, giving access to data feeds of verified products with sustainability insights and powering transactions for ethical businesses.”

The tech platform is currently partnering with over 200 sustainability-focused e-commerce brands to create a verified sustainable product data feed and connect them to large audiences. 

Melissa Wijngaarden says, “We saw that many marketplaces and platforms actually want to promote more sustainable products, but data about product sustainability across brands is simply lacking. On the other hand, there are many brands actually doing very well on sustainability that are not reaching large audiences. With Impactbytes, we close this gap.” 

The platform also allows media outlets, including magazines, bloggers, and influencers, to access the data to find and verify products and brands that fit sustainability values for their articles and content. 

Impactbytes also provide monetisation tools to allow media outlets to earn commissions by promoting sustainable products and brands. 

Impactbytes is launching its beta version and opening an investment round to develop the product and address the product sustainability data problem.

Amsterdam-based Project Cece is an online marketplace for fair and sustainable fashion. The trio founded Project Cece in 2017 as they began to learn about the harmful impact of the fashion industry on people and the environment.

The platform offers over 40,000 products from more than 200 ethical fashion stores and 400 fair trade brands. The Dutch company’s goal is to have a positive impact on the fashion industry by making fair and sustainable clothing easy to find.

After its initial success in the Netherlands, the company expanded its operations in Germany and the UK.
