The Coalition for Responsible Evolution of AI (CoRE-AI) is a multi-stakeholder coalition established in India to advocate for the responsible development and deployment of AI.
The coalition unites over 30 key stakeholders, including tech giants like
, , AWS, and Infosys, academic institutions such as IIM Bangalore and Ashoka University, and AI startups. The CoRE-AI coalition, headquartered at The Dialogue tech think tank in New Delhi, aims to foster innovation among Indian AI startups and ensure that the perspectives of industry, academia, and startups on AI regulation are effectively communicated to the government.
CoRE-AI aims to build public trust in AI by setting voluntary industry guidelines and contributing to robust regulatory frameworks. Its key objectives include fostering public-private partnerships, addressing algorithm biases, ensuring transparency, and protecting user privacy and data.
In an interview with The Hindu, the CoRE-AI coalition stated that it will adopt a “principles-based approach,” utilising risk assessments to address AI challenges, develop guidelines, and contribute to a robust governance framework that fosters an innovative AI ecosystem in India.
S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), reiterated the government’s support for the initiative in a video message at the launch event. He stated that the world is looking to India to take a leadership role in the critical area of AI application, particularly on behalf of the global south.
Krishnan emphasised that India’s influence and leadership in this area will significantly shape the ethical stance on AI and ensure that its application benefits all.
“Government welcomes support, and interventions from a wide range of players who can bring the relevant information to the table on this aspect. And taking in all of these inputs, undoubtedly a robust framework will emerge where India will also be able to not just use AI for the benefit of its own people, but play a leadership role globally. I’m confident the CoRE-AI forum will contribute to this larger national goal,” he further added.
The launch of CoRE-AI comes at a time when India is actively shaping its AI strategy, with NITI Aayog’s National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence already identifying key areas for AI deployment and highlighting ethical considerations like fairness, transparency, and privacy.
CoRE-AI aims to harness AI’s power for social good by bringing together diverse stakeholders, driving socio-economic growth, and addressing complex challenges while mitigating potential risks. The coalition’s website will serve as a central hub for information, resources, and updates on its initiatives.
