Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the union budget for 2022-2023, has proposed to align the National Skill Qualification Framework with dynamic industry needs. A digital ecosystem for skilling & livelihood (DESL) portal will be launched, said the FM.

“The e-stack will be launched to empower citizens to skill, reskill, upskill through online training. It will also provide API-based trusted skill credentials, payment and discovery layers to find relevant jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities.”

She added that the ‘One Class, One TV Channel’ programme of PM e-vidya will be expanded from 12 to 200 TV channels. This will enable all states to provide supplementary education in regional languages for K12 sections.

The education sector has undergone a profound transformation in the past two years. And that’s not limited to the K12 segment. Consistent fund flows and the resultant M&As marked the year for edtech startups, where the space as a whole witnessed 31 M&A deals, accounting for 15% of the total 206 M&A deals in the startup universe.

Given the uncertainty around the reopening of schools, colleges and other educational institutions, edtech startups are expected to witness growth in user base venture capital funding.

The launch of the DESL portal to upskill the Indian youth to match employer needs will not only make the youth job-ready but also positively help edtech companies such as upGrad, Erudictus, Relevel by Unacademy, working in the learning and development segment scale rapidl
