Barcelona-based Seqera Labs has announced that it raised $5.5M(€4.6M) in a seed funding round co-led by European VCs Talis Capital and Speedinvest.
The round also saw participation from existing investor BoxOne Ventures and includes a grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan, which supports essential open source software in science.

Seqera — a portmanteau of “sequence” and “era” – claims to have garnered massive eyeballs during the pandemic as its platform was used for the identification of COVID-19 variants. The company processes almost all the UK’s COVID-19 data.
Fund Utilisation
With the proceeds, the company plans to enhance its technological acumen and grow its North American presence.

Seqera has entered into the personalised medicine space which is expected to witness immense growth in the next few years. One of the company’s customers is Gritstone bio which uses Sequera’s platform Nextflow across research and production areas for machine learning workloads in their personalised oncology applications.
Sequera is focusing on the life sciences segment, but the Nextflow software can be used by companies across all computational-intense, data pipeline applications including ML and AI, manufacturing and financial services.
