OpenAI rolls out GPT-4.1 model with improved coding capabilities

OpenAI has released GPT-4.1, its latest flagship AI model that excels at coding and instruction. The rollout includes two other variants: GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano, which will be available via API (Application Programming Interface) but not through ChatGPT.

The company said the models outperform GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini across benchmarks, particularly in agentic coding tasks and long-context understanding.

“GPT‑4.1 is significantly better than GPT‑4o at a variety of coding tasks, including agentically solving coding tasks, frontend coding, making fewer extraneous edits, following different formats reliably, ensuring consistent tool usage, and more,” the company said in a blog post.

OpenAI has priced its latest model at $2 per million input tokens and $8 per million output tokens. The mini and nano versions are built for speed and cost-efficiency, with GPT-4.1 nano priced at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.40 for output—the cheapest model OpenAI has released to date.

At the recent TED 2025 event, CEO Sam Altman said OpenAI’s tools have reached 800 million users globally.

Meanwhile, COO Brad Lightcap revealed that India is now ChatGPT’s fastest-growing market since it introduced its new Ghibli-style image-generation feature. He stated that over 130 million users had created more than 700 million images within a week.

Altman previously praised India’s rapid AI adoption, saying, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world.”

He also noted that while ChatGPT took five days to reach one million users during its public debut three years ago, the platform was adding one million users every hour last week.
