Have you ever had that urge to move somewhere completely new? To start over again and relive your life in a brand new place? Most people have this urge at least once in life, and it’s this urge that pushes them to move across the country and get planning to do something new when they get there. Your life is going to change when you move cross-country, but putting a move like this together is a lot of work! There is so much to look forward to when you join a new community and start a new life, and you can gain a ton of new experiences when you do this.

There are a lot of reasons that someone wants to move to another part of the country, and instead of spending weeks in advance worrying and fretting over the move, you need to make sure that you are doing all that you can for a smooth transition. From researching new areas and workplaces to looking into logistic companies, you have a lot of work ahead of you. That doesn’t mean that your move won’t happen and it certainly doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to set up in your new home ASAP! With this in mind, let’s look at five things you have to do when moving cross-country.

  1. Logistics. You need to consider your transport to your new location. You have furniture and boxes, suitcases and things that have all of your belongings in them, and you can’t always put this on the roof of the car. So, you need to figure out what you need to be able to move all of your things to the town you’re headed to. You may not want to drive the van yourself, and that’s fine! Just make sure the movers that you choose are COVID-safe in their activities and you’ll do fine.
  2. Declutter. Before you go anywhere, go through all of your stuff and see whether you can let go of a bit of it. There is no use moving things to a new house that you haven’t used in years; all it will do is take up space and get in your way, and there’s no use in that! The less you have, the cheaper and easier the move will be. This is especially important if you’re planning to downsize to a smaller home.
  3. Pack. When you pack you need to do this carefully. How you pack will influence your move greatly, and throwing it all into boxes and going is only the basics. You need to pack as much as possible in the smallest amount of boxes, and grouping all your boxes by different rooms in the house will help you to get things in the right place right away. Strategizing your packing is smart!
  4. The Finer Details. Take the time to get through the smaller details sorted as early as possible, from notifying the bank of your new address to changing the kid’s schools. The doctor, gym membership and even your insurance will all need an update in your address, so write a list of all the people you have to notify and get on that before the moving day.
  5. Takeout. You need something to look forward to that first night in your new home, so book yourself a delicious dinner to be delivered and save yourself the time cooking on your first night!
