How To Advertise: Is The Best Marketing TV Commercials Or Marketing Online?

Large companies, medium companies and small businesses pay attention to the trends that are taking place. As you decide how to advertise to your customers, you may be wondering which is the best advertising. We’ll examine two things you need to know about doing TV commercials or online marketing (digital marketing) and what you can expect for the near future.

First, according to TVB, ad spending on TV rose 7.7% in 2012 or nearly 22 billion dollars. And according to eMarketer, ad spending on the Internet rose 16.6% in 2012 or nearly 38 billion dollars.

Even though less of a percentage increase occurred for TV ads, total dollars spent was 2.5 times higher. So does this make TV advertising a better choice?

Second, let’s look at the number of people who watch TV versus the number of people who surf the web. In the United States, 283 million people watch TV and 212 million people surf the Internet.

Clearly, there are still more people who watch TV then surf the web. Again this might look like TV advertising wins again, right?

Many advertising firms admit the time has come for a new king to be crowned. Nearly 75% of ad agencies report that online video ads are taking customers to the next level because they are more effective.

Why is this happening? As more and more people are introduced to smartphones, tablets and other devices that allow them to surf the web, this audience will continue to grow.

People now have the choice to view whatever they want. Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Pinterest allow the user to decide what is important. TV advertising really doesn’t give you this option.

Digital viewing is driving the online video ad market, according to eMarketer. YouTube states that 72 hours of video were uploaded every minute and that’s data from 2011!

There’s no doubt that TV has more than a 4 decade lead on digital marketing, but this reign of supremacy may come to an end in the next few years.

Online marketing can push the boundaries unlike a TV ad. The Federal Trade Commission does not scrutinize Internet ads nearly as much as it does for TV.

The biggest reason online marketing has become so big, so fast is because you can create a free ad very easily on the Internet. This is not the case for ads on TV.

If you are a small business, the answer seems fairly obvious. You have the opportunity to connect with your customers on a very personal level and it won’t cost you much more than your time.

Large companies and medium companies may have the budget to utilize TV commercials and online marketing. How to advertise your business is up to you. But you cannot ignore the potential digital marketing can bring to your business.
