Voice is becoming the next social network of choice! Launched during the pandemic, Clubhouse has become a sensation in the social network arena.
Why? First is the platform’s key attribute – audio, which has set itself apart from the other established social media platforms including, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others.

Second, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk appeared on the invite-only app around late January to talk about human beings living on Mars, aliens, and much more. Well, the rest is history!
Besides Elon Musk, Clubhouse has other celebrities like Mark Zuckerberg, Drake, Oprah, Kevin Hart, and others. Recently, the Clubhouse released its app on the Android platform, which was iOS exclusive. As of now, the Clubhouse is valued at $4B (approx €3.3B).
Post the Clubhouse success, almost all the social media platforms have jumped into the audio platform bandwagon. Twitter has Spaces, Reddit has Reddit Talks, Facebook is working on Live Audio Room, and the recent platform to join the party is Spotify.
Spotify, a Swedish audio streaming platform, has unveiled Clubhouse clone – Greenroom. Let’s take a look at 5 features that make Greenroom a worthy competitor to Clubhouse.
Built on Locker Room
The audio app is built on Locker Room, created by Betty Labs. The Locker Room is a sports-focused audio platform, but with Greenroom, Spotify emphasises culture, politics, and sports. It’s worth mentioning that Spotify acquired Betty Labs in March for an undisclosed amount.
Available on Android and iOS
Unlike Clubhouse, which was iOS exclusive with the invite-only option, Greenroom is available on both Android and iOS in 135 markets. The app is available only in English at present, with other options to be released in the future.
“The Greenroom offering will continue to evolve as we learn more about what creators and listeners want from their live audio experience. We’ll also bring exciting new programming to the platform spanning music, culture, and entertainment topics in addition to the sports content Locker Room has been known for,” says Spotify in the official blog.
Live chat
Greenroom comes with a live chat text feature that can be enabled for each room only by the host. Listeners can give gems to the host as a token of appreciation. Furthermore, the app features a native recording, which allows the users to save it and later republish them as a podcast.
Standalone App
Unlike, Twitter Space, which is embedded into the Twitter app, Greenroom is a standalone app and can be downloaded from the app store. Users can sign in through their Spotify login, even though it’s not required to use the app.
As a part of the sign-up procedure, users have to select their interests from a wide range of topics, post which you’ll be notified on which rooms you can join.
Spotify Creator Fund
Spotify also launched a Spotify Creator Fund, which will help live audio creators monetise their work.
“We believe Spotify has an opportunity not only to enable live broadcasts, but to aid discovery, drive consumption, and accelerate the growth of the live category overall. The app unveiling is our opportunity to begin laying the foundation for the exciting roster of content and capabilities Spotify has in store in our venture into live audio, concludes Spotify.
