Could working from home become a legal right in the Netherlands?


Battlelines are beginning to form in the workplace as offices reopen and management issue policies to staff about returning to a bricks and mortar setup two or three days a week.

In the UK, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) reports that one in ten companies plan to reduce pay or benefits for home workers, according to a survey of over 1,000 employers.

Across the pond in the US, Apple staff issued management an open letter, rebutting the need to be in the office, and underlining their desire to continue work from home. 

For lots of us, this is the crux of the issue. Other companies are responding favourably to how their people feel, understanding that to keep their best staff, they will have to move with the times. One such is Airbnb. In May CEO Brian Chesky said that the “vast majority” of staff would be able to continue working remotely from home, or anywhere else, permanently, without a cut in pay.

“Today’s startups have embraced remote work and flexibility, and I think this will become the predominant way that we all work 10 years from now. This is where the world is going,” Chesky said. Notably, he also added that the past two years have been the company’s “most productive” period to date.

In the Netherlands, positive moves are afoot with the news that two Dutch lawmakers, Steven van Weyenberg, who is a member of the pro-European D-66 Party and Senna Maatoug, a lawmaker for the Green Party, are proposing a bill to make the Netherlands one of the first countries to legally allow employees to work remotely.

“We have the green light for this new law thanks to the support we received from both employees and employers’ unions. We are very hopeful it will pass before the summer,” Van Weyenberg said.

Location: Nantes, France (or full remote).

The Role: As part of The Fork’s upgrade of its products, it switched the main user paths of its mobile application from webview to react native, taking the opportunity to improve the application’s quality, design, code, and architecture significantly. The company is now seeking a Senior React Native Engineer to lead and continue this improvement, help with new features, support the owners, and educate and train everyone around best practices and react native.

The Responsibilities: You’ll be working in the B2B part of The Fork’s business, with 40-50 developers on software that allows partner restaurants to manage themselves. You will be working on microservices such as AWS, Node, React, React-native, Graphql, typescript, Rabbitmq, Grafana and ELK.

The Requirements: Passionate about software development, you will have a minimum of three years’ experience working on React and React Native development and will be familiar with

mobile development specifics.

Senior Ruby/React Engineer – Hospital, Doctolib

Location: Berlin (hybrid and remote available)

The Role: The Senior Ruby/React Fullstack Engineer will work on Doctolib’s productivity software for hospitals and large facilities. You will be writing high-quality, secure, performant and well-tested code that helps thousands of healthcare professionals spend more time caring for their patients, and deploying it to some of the largest medical facilities in Europe.

The Responsibilities: Fullstack Engineers work in small feature-focused teams, each dedicated to a specific challenge. You’ll be supported by infrastructure, tooling and security teams and will be driven by one main KPI per quarter.

The Requirements: You’ll be proactive, involved, curious, and collaborative with an ability to write test-driven pragmatically engineered code.

CEO Team – Special Projects Manager, Voodoo

Location: Paris, France (some remote days available).

The Role: Voodoo creates mobile games and apps and has 6 billion downloads and over 300 million monthly active users. Its strategy and operations team works on high priority projects identifying new business opportunities, leading teams, and fixing operational and performance issues. The CEO Team – Special Projects Manager will analyse Voodoo’s competitive environment and identify new business opportunities.

The Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the CEO, or to a C-level executive depending on the project, you’ll lead specific diversification projects and manage teams, identify optimisation opportunities and jump into business operations to help resolve issues.

The Requirements: You’ll have solid, top tier consulting firm solid experience and will have attended business or engineering school. You’ll be capable of deep strategic and systemic thinking and have a versatile mind, will be able to learn fast and challenge the business.
